It is incredibly easy to feel intimated in the gym; I promise, it’s not just you! First off, the majority of people lifting weights and squatting are men, and the last thing you want to deal with is a cute guy when you’re sweating you’re butt off. Also, as a beginner in weight training, you don’t quite yet know how to use all the machines, you aren’t confident that you’re doing all the exercises correctly, and seeing men and women who look like they know exactly what they’re doing does not help.
So, read on for a few tips that may help you feel more comfortable and confident at the gym:
- Start off simple. Oftentimes, the most effective exercises are the simplest. The amount of types of machines may be different depending on your on-campus gym, but trust me, you can still get in a great workout with only dumbbells. I love to watch workout videos before I go because I want to be sure that I have the correct form, and also it can get boring to repeatedly to the same things every few days. Check out this site if you want to watch step-by-step explanations of specific exercises.
- Go with a friend. Going to the gym with a friend will not only make you feel more confident, but it will also help you stay motivated and make the gym more fun. Whether your friend knows more about weight training than you or not, just being with someone you know will make you feel more comfortable.
- Dress cute. Now, this is not a necessity, but never underestimate the power of cute shoes! I used to wonder why the heck a person would spend so much money on clothes that are meant to be sweated in, but truly, feeling confident before you even go into the gym is extremely helpful.
4. Remember that everyone (well almost everyone) is at the gym for the same reason: to workout. If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, who cares?! You will make mistakes in the beginning because weight training is just another learning process. Watch this video of some of the worst gym fails if you want a quick laugh!
